27A Reading Reflection No.3

What was the general theme or argument of the book?

The general theme of the book is to illuminate the exploitation of human irrationality. Kahneman delved into psychological and experimental concepts which greatly observed cognitive biases, human naivety, human reasoning and the science behind happiness. Kahneman desires readers to control the way and speed in which one thinks. Kahneman states the inefficiency of human to rely on standard reasoning in certain condition, instead he states human make more decisions with the ideal of happiness and satisfaction, excluding the ideal of maximum utility.

How did the book, in your opinion, connect with and enhance what you are learning in ENT 3003?

The tonal structure of this book can be characterized as egoistical and overconfident.  This observation relates to the spirit of a true entrepreneur. One who is deeply bold and superbly assured in his observation, research, finding and belief. If one were to exclude the countless observation and research dutiful performed in this text that would yield the truthiness of the author hypothesis, the mere assurance the author possess would cause one to care such beliefs.

If you had to design an exercise for this class, based on the book you read, what would that exercise involve?

I would place all classmates within a situation that requires slow methodical thinking and abrupt and fast thinking.  For the slow methodical thinking I would create a treasure hunt with numerous clue that would require slow thinking. For the fast thinking I would place the classmates in a timed clue hunt, with view clues and a great surprise at the ending of the challenge.

What was your biggest surprise or 'aha' moment when reading the book? In other words, what did you learn that differed most from your expectations?

Khaneman observation of System 1 and System 2 mind. System 1 is the intuitive type of thinking: emotions and impressions. System 2 is the deliberate type: beliefs, attitude and intentions.  I did not expect to find a researcher who could acknowledge the different cognitive process and mindset one has. It displays a greater understanding of indecisiveness due to this research presenting greater insight into the concept of two minds.

  1. Hey Candice, I’m back again. Like I never left. So what book are you talking about? I think it’s the thinking faster one or whatever, but yeah. Tell us what book it is. I don’t really understand your exercise either. We have to think slow and fast at the same time? I don’t get it. Overall glad you learned a little bit about Khaneman.

  2. This is book is really dense and can be hard to interpret. Take a second to explain one explain of how this book effected your day to day life. This representation will be really helpful. I read they book too but as you write your reflection, ask yourself, what can i say to show people I really learned something. Instead of giving statements, tell me a story. Overall, good work.
